BIOELECTRIC POTENTIALS IN HALICYSTIS VII. rIME EFFECTS OF LOW OXXGEN

چکیده
Previous work I has shown that the existing or experimentally altered gradients of inorganic ions or other substances between the environment and the vacuolar sap of impaled ceils of ttalicystis have little influence upon the large and steady potential difference measurable across the protoplasm. The r61e of the latter, with its inherent gradients and asymmetries was therefore emphasized in the earlier title of this series: "protoplasmic potentials." Although it seems desirable to alter this to the more general term now used, it is particularly the "protoplasmic" aspects which will be considered in the next several papers. Since the cell's E. M. ~. can drive an appreciable current of 5 to 10 microamperes through a completed circuit for many days, a source of energy, eventually metabolic, is indicated. Agents affecting metabolism, such as oxygen tension, temperature, light, inhibitors, and stimulants, will therefore be discussed in the next few papers, with a view to indicating how metabolism may produce or alter the bioelectric potential. The present paper is restricted to the effects of altered oxygen ten-

Bioelectric Potentials in Halicystis Viii. the Effects of Light* by L. R. Blinks
Bioelectric effects of illumination are most familiar in animal organs like the retina, but they have also been known in plants since the work of Haake, t Klein, ~ Querton, s A. D. Wailer, 4 and especially J. C. Waller? Other workers e-l~ have also described responses, usually with a rather complex time course, which is difficult to analyze in any consistent fashion. Although some colorless pla...
متن کاملCalculations of Bioelectric Potentials
Interest in the study of Halicystis and of Valonia has been stimulated by discoveries of marked contrasts and striking similarities existing side by side. This is illustrated by new experiments with the alkali metals and alkaline earths. In Halicystis the apparent mobilities of K(+), Rb(+), Cs(+), and Li(+) (calculated by means of Henderson's equation from changes in P.D. produced by replacing ...
متن کاملProtoplasmic Potentials in Halicystis
The potential difference across the protoplasm of impaled cells of two American species of Halicystis is compared. The mean value for H. Osterhoutii is 68.4 mv.; that for H. ovalis is 79.7 mv., the sea water being positive to the sap in both. The higher potential of H. ovalis is apparently due to the higher concentration of KCl (0.3 M) in its vacuolar sap. When the KCl content of H. Osterhoutii...
متن کاملSemantic, repetition and rime priming between spoken words: behavioral and electrophysiological evidence.
Semantic, phonological and repetition priming for auditorily presented words were examined, using both behavioral reaction times (RTs) and electrophysiological event-related potentials (ERPs) measures. On critical trials, a word prime was followed by a word target that was semantically or phonologically related (rime) or not related (control) to the prime. Pairs of word-pseudoword items served ...
متن کاملBoron-induced Bioelectric Field Change in Mung Bean Hypocotyl.
Low concentrations of boron were found to affect the bioelectric field potentials of hypocotyls excised from 4-day-old mung bean (Phaseolus aureus cv. Oklahoma 612) seedlings grown in darkness and irradiated with red light. The significance of this effect is discussed in relation to the possible role of boron in some membrane function.
